Drug testing is the process of checking if a person has ingested illicit drugs and if he or she has it in the system. This works by taking a sample from the person, like urine, blood, or even hair, and … Continue reading
Urine Drug Testing
A urine drug test is designed to detect the presence of drug metabolites in your urine. A positive urine drug test (positive meaning drug metabolites have been detected), gives a strong indication to the tester that you have ingested the substances found in your urine recently.
Drug testing actually looks for what is called drug metabolites, not the drug itself. Drug metabolites are biochemical changes that occur to drugs after they are processed by your body's enzymes.
Positive urine tests are not an indication that someone is under the influence of drugs at the time of the test. Instead, this test measures and detects whether or not you've used a certain drug in the past few days, weeks, or in the case of some drugs, months.
What Drugs Are Tested For?
The federal government's Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) has set protocols for drug testing the most common drugs of abuse. As of now, this is a 5 panel drug test, which tests for amphetamines/methamphetamines, cocaine, cannabinoids, opiates, and phencyclidine (PCP).
Some testers may also choose to do extended testing for other substances such as MDMA (ecstasy), anabolic steroids, hallucinogens, methadone, alcohol, barbiturates, and benzodiazepines. In some rare cases, urine tests may be used to detect the presence of LSD, Tryptamines, and Phenethylamines.
What Drugs Do Drug Tests Not Detect?
As we see more and more new "designer or next generation drugs" each year, drug testing labs not always have the ability to test for them. For example, bath salt inhalants, which has become a new popular trend in designer drugs, now is being tested for. So if the drug testing corporations don't have a test for a new drug, eventually will come up with one if the demand calls for it.
What Can Cause False Positives?
False positives occur when metabolites from legal prescription drugs and other substances are mistaken for the metabolites of illicit drugs. Marijuana has a unique metabolite, making a false positive for this substance very rare. However, certain prescription medications like Protonix (used to treat acid reflux) can cause a user to have a false positive for THC (marijuana).
Some over-the-counter cold medications can cause false positives to be triggered for amphetamines. Usually when a positive drug screen occurs, the lab follows up with a more sophisticated test known as GC-MS, to give a more accurate result. and eliminate false positives. For a lab, the GC-MS is the final say on a drug test.
Why are Urine Drug Tests Frequently Used?
Urine drug testing is popular because this type of test is less expensive. Urine drug tests are usually reliable and can test for multiple substances. Additionally, urine drug tests are typically upheld in court and generally withstand legal challenges.
Passing a Urine Drug Test
You can pass a urine drug test is you've used illegal drugs or prescription medication that was not prescribed to you. There are many methods that can eliminate or mask drug metabolites in your system to give a negative urine drug test.
Some individuals opt for what are know as "home remedies". Examples would be drinking a lot of water prior to testing, as an attempt to dilute urine. Others will try urine spiking, by adding bleach, salt, or vinegar to their urine samples when in the bathroom of a testing lab. None of these methods are recommended, as the labs have adulteration tests that can pick this up, no matter what you may read on certain drug testing message blogs or forums.
Some industrious users call in favors to drug-free friends to provide them with clean urine samples. The problem here is you have to be sure the friend has not used any drug, even prescriptions, as they may show up on the test or even create a false positive. Keeping the sample warm is a challenge here as well, as the lab will test the temperature of the urine, looking for it to be near body temperature.
You can purchase both synthetic and real human urine online. Some synthetics do not work and some do, so best to do your homework and ask questions beforehand. Also, in some states it's illegal (felonies in a few) to buy and sell urine for the purpose of beating a drug test.
There are many drug metabolite masking and cleansing products sold online and in traditional stores. Some of these products do work, and are not detected. The issue is that many of them are manufactured poorly, as they try to keep the costs down on the products. The result is a failed test when using a bad product. So shop carefully and ask questions before buying a product.
